Tiring of the stifling hierarchy of a large veterinary practice, Frank Samson decides to go it alone.  But it’s a slow start. When a job turns up at short notice, Frank is doubly relieved to get out of the city – it’s a job, at last, and he has just had an unintentional brush with some unsavoury characters and, almost, with the law.

Settling into the peaceful, rural surroundings of his home for the next six weeks, Samson is impressed to find that one of his charges is the priceless Catamaran, the all-conquering racehorse, now just finished his second season at stud.  But very soon, he begins to suspect that all may not be right at the stables, and he is torn between guarding the reputation of his absent employer and the welfare of Catamaran.  His concern over being followed by a sinister car is soon forgotten when real disaster strikes.  In the following days, what had promised to be a relaxing sojourn in the sleepy countryside descends into an ever deepening nightmare, and soon, Samson is fighting not only for his own life but also for the lives of those closest to him.
